The Adversity Advantage with Doug Bopst

Mar 18, 2021

Today’s guest is a celebrity chef and Reiki master Serena Poon. Her clients have included Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Hue Hefner, and many others.

A leading chef to the Hollywood elite, Serena sets herself apart in a saturated industry with her genuine passion for curating intentional healing and wellness programs designed for optimal and sustainable health. She does this through Integrating energetic techniques and education on food nutrition, how food affects our bodies on a physiological as well as emotional level.

Serena’s devotion to focusing on the importance of whole body, mind, and soul wellness is inspired by the profound effect cancer had on her family, with both her mother and father diagnosed within two years of each other.

We get into all of this on today’s episode as well as the negative side effects of caregiving.  Taking care of her parents while they were ill nearly cost her her life as she developed MRSA which required multiple surgeries, one of which was nearly fatal. She shares how she bounced back as well as what she wished she would have done differently during that time. We discuss the importance of things like having a mentor, gratitude, and trusting your intuition. Of course, we also talk about her business as well as why you shouldn’t wait until it’s too late to practice self-care.

Topics discussed:

How did Serena pivot from being at the very low point in her health to becoming who she is today?

How exactly did Serena built herself out of the hole she was in coming from her near death experience

What Serena would have done differently for her own health to make sure that she was in the proper frame of mind physically, mentally, and emotionally to handle the situation she experienced

Things Serena wishes she would have done in the past to make herself more stable

Serena’s opinion on why most people don’t listen to their body/gut feeling

Takeaways:

“Any sacrifice I could make, whether it's my health or whatever it is that I needed, I will do that to make sure they [my family] are okay.” - Serena Poon

“We're all caretakers in a way, whether it's a person, or a pet, or your business ‘cause maybe your business is your baby.” - Serena Poon

You need to have your person (a coach, a mentor, your best friend, or someone who's a little bit older than you)

You have to make sure that you have some sort of support network or help.

“Our bodies are temples. They serve us without us really honoring it all the time for what it is.” - Serena Poon

It’s important to try and eat a rainbow of foods throughout the course of your day.

There's always that flip side where there's dark, there's light.
